Off-shoring / Outsourcing: Creates New Jobs in the West
By: John Parker

Francois Pecher, a Belgian entrepreneur and senior executive with a document processing company "Input for You" firmly believes, contrary to public perception off-shoring / outsourcing work to low labour cost countries like India does not result in job losses for western countries. He deems it nothing more than a myth or a bete noire used by trade unions, and those running for public posts / government positions to garner votes with a promise to legislate against the trend.

In a seminar organised by the Belgo-Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry held at the Indian embassy this week, he told the audience the reality off-shoring / outsourcing to India was that it had helped create other jobs in his native Belgium.

In an interview, Pecher is quoted as saying: "We are outsourcing some of our activities to India, because these activities cannot be done in Belgium due to the heavy labour costs it would incur." Further, he added: "We are outsourcing to India having not only labour costs in mind. We are also doing it for the labour efficiency and the technical skills displayed by Indian workers."

In his speech, Pecher went on to attest off-shoring / outsourcing certain segments of business had enabled his company to grow, expand and create new jobs in Belgium in lieu of most of the ones that went off-shore. The widespread belief in USA and Europe that their jobs were being stolen by Indian workers was a belief that had no basis in ground reality.

In response, Indian Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Dipak Chatterjee had this to say: "If European countries can outsource to the US, without generating such a hue and cry, why was it not also the case for European companies outsourcing to India."

A positive trend, off-shoring / outsourcing benefits both outsourcing and service providing countries. As the world shrinks to the size of a global village, does it not befall the haves to better the lot of the have nots. As good citizens of the earth, it is our duty, first and foremost to improve the lot of our fellow humans! To that effect, off-shoring / outsourcing is a practical way to help restore a sense of pride and improve the finances of developing countries by utilising their talent and skill set.

Tongue in cheek, one can't help remarking: USA and Europe should realise that off-shoring / outsourcing is nothing but KARMA or chickens coming to roost. The West colonised and stripped bare the very same countries they are accusing of stealing their jobs. Let justice prevail, long live off-shoring / outsourcing!
